Gila County, AZ
WELCOME TO THE
APACHE TRAIL IN
GILA COUNTY, AZ
Arizona’s iconic Apache Trail (State Route 88) is a 122-mile round-trip journey packed with history, adventure, and jaw-dropping scenery. Beginning in Apache Junction, just 50 minutes east of Phoenix, this historic route winds through the rugged Superstition Mountains and deep into the Tonto National Forest. Originally used by the Apache people and later developed as a stagecoach route, the trail showcases Arizona’s Old West charm and natural beauty.
Along the way, visitors can explore attractions like Goldfield Ghost Town, Lost Dutchman State Park, and the stunning desert lakes—Canyon Lake, Apache Lake, and Roosevelt Lake. Canyon Lake offers boat rentals and steamboat tours, while the more remote Apache Lake is perfect for solitude and fishing. Tortilla Flat, population six, still serves up Wild West flavor and prickly pear gelato.
Past the towering Roosevelt Dam, the journey continues through Globe and Miami, two historic mining towns rich with culture and small-town character. Though portions of the trail are unpaved and challenging, the route is well-maintained and offers countless photo opportunities. Whether you’re after outdoor adventure, history, or scenic beauty, the Apache Trail delivers an unforgettable Arizona experience.
